In this workshop which we developed in 2011 we turn datasets into spatial experiences using both GPS-equiped smartphones and analogue interventions. This allows us to literally walk through statistics.

About
As the amount of data that we collect grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to distill data into an opinion.

In this workshop we explore a form of spatial data ‘visualisation’ using GPS-equiped smartphones. It’s contextual nature (it’s in public space, where the issues often are) allows it to engage an audience in a to-the-point and (literally) concrete way.

For example, we could create an experience that gives feedback about local wealth, polution, political affiliation, basically anything you have data on, and turn it into an explorable landscape.

In this workshop we apply the hacker mentality to an urban context. Hackers, modern day ‘concerned citizens’, understand the data, and already employ guerilla tactics to inject their message into more mainstream discourse. In this workshop we take it to the street. This means we will be cheeky where necessary.

In short, in this workshop we will explore tools and generate ideas around creating data-experiences in the city. Literally bringing the fight and the information to the street. Our hope is to energise participants to engage in this type of hacking after the workshop is over. After all, as part of a scientist’s or nerd’s social responsibility, they should not just create new data, but spend effort in making it accessible and understandable too.

Program for the day
A workshop day usually involves a walk through town in which we explore the technology, after which we go to the workshop location for tea and a presentation. The main part of the day is spent actually creating the experiences, and ends with their deployment in town.

Requirements
•Bring your own laptops and mobile devices
•Wear walking shoes, and bring warm clothes or raingear if necessary

Hosts
This workshop has been a joining of forces between NetNiet.org and the Dat Zou Jij Wel Willen Weten foundation (literally translated the ‘wouldn’t you like to know’ foundation), a Dutch non-profit that strives to create a more open and accountable government through open data sharing and analysis. Members from both foundations are usually present.
